This device is an EPON ONU device. As compared to other broadband access technologies such as xDSL and cable modem, Passive Optical Network (PON) technology offers some compelling advantages, including a long-term life expectancy of the fiber infrastructure, lower operating costs through the reduction of “active” components, support for greater distances between equipment nodes, and most importantly, much greater bandwidth.

This device provides the core functionality of an 802.3ah Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) Optical Network Unit (ONU) solution. The device is targeted at Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) solutions and can also be used as the uplink physical layer (PHY) device in a Fiber-to-the-Cabinet solution.
